update on biscuit/bisque appliances

As you may recall, I’ve been pondering whether biscuit would look lovely with the kashmir white granite (potentially) and the Kraftmaid maple oatmeal glaze and moss glaze cabinets.

A very kind man at Home Depot did put an oatmeal glaze cabinet up against a biscuit appliance — and what to my wondering eyes did appear: the appliance is a yellow beige and the oatmeal cabinet is definitely a gray beige. And they absolutely do not coordinate …

So, back to rubbed oil bronze (ala Jenn-Air) or perhaps I’ll suck it up and do stainless again. Stay tuned.

  1. I really like your house. The colors you chose are not my style; I don’t like red in anything but dresses, and I would not have matched that green with the red.

But wow! Together they have so much personality! So different from the … pink? … original. The original had the color I associate with what surfaces after your sunburn peels. It’s not a bad color, just … Blah.

I can see that oatmeal would be grayer — biscuit goes more to the tanner side of white = some yellow.

So there are lots of colors you could use. White is not only *always* available, and not only a neutral color, but actually goes quit well with gray. I mention the availability because not all appliances have the same life span. If you go with a trendy color now, you may end up not able to match it when you need to replace an appliance one day.

Black would go very well with a white-to-gray. A bluer green would also look nice, but the only green appliances I’ve seen were all a more yellow green. And yeah, I bet the stainless steel will look magnificent. But, expect it to be more expensive, and remember that it is also the trendy thing right now.

I actually like the stainless, but Hubby wouldn’t let me go for it. He worked his way through college working at hamburger joints — he doesn’t ever again wish to find himself in anything that looks at all like an industrial kitchen. It was also more expensive, so that was just as well.

    Looking forward to the decision.

  2. Hi Carol: Thanks for your feedback. The red door was a risk … it’s a bit yellower on the door than it looked in the can. But I figure I’ll live with it a bit (I haven’t moved to this house yet) and see what I think.

I’m in love with the green but, my mom, for example, hates it. Personal taste. She spent weeks trying to talk me into mint green.

I have stainless appliances now (the lower end from Sears that were discontinued models so I got great deals 5 years ago).

I’ve been lusting after the oil rubbed bronze since I first saw the Jenn-Air line promoted a year and a half ago. They are more than the stainless I sprung for last time, so I may wind up with black or white after all. The other option is to use panel doorfronts but those are highend appliances too.

I agree with Husband on the stainless, lol. I worked my way through college in the cafeteria. Stainless counters still give me flashbacks. Maybe that’s why I’m not enthralled with stainless, although they look spiffy with my cherry cabinets, brownish/tan/ivory/black/gray granite and polished nickel knobs.

The stainless appliances (refrigerator especially) need more polishing as they are magnets for fingerprints and water marks.

I’m going to check out your site! g

  3. Hi – thanks for answering me on dream home diaries! I’m bookmarking your site so I can keep up with your adventures.

I really like your color scheme, and the idea of changing things up on the island. I’d look again at stainless – or stainless look. I have a “fake” stainless refrigerator and dishwasher and a stainless range and microwave. All together I spent around $2500 for everything. The nice thing about the fake stainless is you don’t have the fingerprint problem. I also think (but many disagree) that stainless will stay popular, it really seems timeless to me.

But good luck with whatever you choose. I’ll stop back often – Jen

  4. Hi Jen: My pleasure. I’m thrilled you’ll stop by when you can. I’ll do better about updating … it has been a crazy year — and the past five months have been zany.

I will check out the fake stainless. The price sounds right! Stainless drives me batty on the refrigerator in particular but if I were neater it would not be such an issue.

I think stainless will remain popular. I’m really enamored with the bronze appliances but with only one high-end manufacturer, they are still pricy. I’m hoping it will catch on with GE or LG or Maytag.

Take care and thanks for writing. g

  5. If you follow consumer reports testing on appliances (like stoves), you’ll see that there’s little, if any, functional cooking advantage to a lot of pricey stainless stoves over more basic appliances. They really got their popularity from the fact that commercial kitchens use them. But that is mainly for the cleaning function.
